Improv with Deems Experiment
Deems is a pianist originally from Manchester. He was surrounded by a lot of music growing up, both inside and outside his home, where Highlife, Afrobeat, Hip hop, R&B, and Classical music were played. Eventually he took up the piano, first playing classical, then transitioning to jazz and improvising generally. Influences include Snarky Puppy, Herbie Hancock, and Brad Mehldau.
“I haven’t been able to get over the sheer joy that comes from listening to and playing music, and Improv with Deems Experiment is a chance for me to share this with fellow musicians and the audience and hopefully create something new in the process.” – Deems
The musicians chosen to collaborate on this project all bring a unique flavour to the sound. Drawing from a wide variety of sonic sources including jazz, art rock, classical and electronic music the musicians are selected for their commitment to free improvisation and communication through music. This iteration features Fabio Ferri (Fabio Ferri) on guitar, James Otieno (tlk, Goya, Datura Roots Collective) on sax, Jonathan Segar (Datura roots collective) on keys and Stan Glendinning (Goya, Vostok) on drums. However part of the excitement of this project is it’s diversity. The line-up will be fluid each time with new musicians joining the line-up and providing their contribution. This is an opportunity to hear some fully improvised and dynamic live music in an intimate venue.
